Waterloo Village - Waterloo Rd, Stanhope, NJ 07874 View mapOn Saturday, June 24, Byram Township Historical Society will partner with Waterloo Village Historic Site and the Canal Society of New Jersey to highlight the history of Byram and commemorate the township’s 225th anniversary.
Waterloo Village, in the 19th Century, was part of Byram that included what is now Stanhope and Hopatcong Boroughs, and was approximately half-way along the Morris Canal’s 102-mile journey across the state, from Phillipsburg to Jersey City, and had all the components necessary to become a thriving canal town. For many, today’s restored Waterloo Village is the place that most completely identifies the heritage of northern New Jersey, with Byram at its center.
Visit Historic Waterloo Village for a full day of things to see and do.
The day will include a full schedule of interpretive tours about various historical trades, crafts, industries, and transportation systems throughout history, as well as activities for children. Enjoy historic building tours, including the gristmill, the Canal Society of NJ Museum as well as the Morris Canal Boat Exhibit. Historic trades demonstrations will include blacksmithing, tin smithing and wool spinning. Take a boat ride along a stretch of the original Morris Canal. Visit Winakung, a native Lenape woodland forest. There’s a petting zoo for kids and live music by the Long Hill String Band for whole family. The event runs from 10am – 4pm with a rain date of June 25. Admission and parking are free.
Waterloo Village is located at 525 Waterloo Road in Byram Township (Stanhope).
